Cork based Absorbents for oil, hydrocarbons and organic solvents without absorbing water.
Cork as Absorbent
The cork used in the CorkSorb products is selected and treated in order to have the best performance to sorb oils and organic compounds. In these conditions cork has a strong affinity with hydrocarbons and the sorbent effect is almost instantaneous. The cork cells suck the oil by capillarity and retain it (see Figure 1).

The absorption capacity of CorkSorb was evaluated for different oils and solvents using a test based on the National Standard of Canada number CAN/CGSB-183.2-94 (see test description). Some of the results are presented at Figure 2.
Comparing with other Sorbent materials
The CorkSorb range uses cork as sorbent and is thus a natural sorbent.
The CorkSorb products have a maximum absorption capacity much higher than all mineral sorbents, and higher or similar when compared with natural and synthetic organic sorbents.
Advance of non Absorbing Water
CorkSorb will not absorb water or any other water based products due to its intrinsic hydrofobicity. This cork property will make possible the use of CorkSorb for selective oil sorption when spills occur in water or in wet pavements. In these conditions a sorbent that absorbs water will be saturated by the water and have a very poor efficiency in absorbing the spilled liquid.
Corksorb products will float in water even when they are saturated.
These properties make the CorkSorb products specially suited for pollution control in water environments or in rainy conditions.
CorkSorb products have high chemical resistance for almost all chemical compounds.
CorkSorb are not suitable for absorption of basic solutions, particularly pH above 13, and oxidizing environments.
